In the opening scenes, we witness a group of people watching on as a gazelle (which is used as a shooting target) urgently searches for a retreat. We soon discover that the group consists of members of an Islamic extremist group called ISIL. One of the members shouts "Don't kill it! Exhaust It!" As sounds of gunshots abruptly rage off at the target. And it is right here that we realise the intensity of this film.

The film tackles real-life matters that many continents/countries face. With half of Syria being under Islamic control, and with Palmyra's ancient cultural site being destroyed. The issues that are tackled in this film are very much relevant today. Timbuktu is a great, moving film that everyone should watch.
