Although it's a bit late I thought it would be awesome to review Suicide Squad in honour of it's Oscar win at the the Academy Awards.
Suicide Squad ,directed by David Ayer, is the third installment from the DC Extended Universe which takes place directly after the events of Batman vs Superman. The story revolves around Argus director Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) seeking to create a government controlled special operations task force comprised of individuals with exceptional abilities & skills. The only catch is this task force consists of some of the worst villains and mercenaries within the DC universe including Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez ), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnueoye-Agbaje) & Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney). This uncanny team of bad guys marshaled by Captain Rick Flagg (Joel Kinneman )are forced to complete a dangerous assignment with the fate of the world at stake.
What I loved about Suicide Squad was the banter & zaniness that each character brought to the table the chemistry amongst the cast was really great & clear to see. Harley Quinn & Deadshot were definitely the coolest and most well rounded characters within the Squad. I loved how we also got a short backstory on each Squad member showing how they ended up getting captured by ARGUS & their personal motivations which helped the audience empathize with them despite the fact that they are all hardened criminals. The comic book references along with cameos from Batman & the Flash we're a real delight for me as a hardcore DC fan.
I wasn't impressed with how rushed the movie felt especially in the second & third acts. The main villain wasn't that interesting as their motivations were pretty one dimensional & arbitrary for me. Another qualm I had was with Jared Leto's portrayal of the Joker as it was a huge draw for most people to watch this movie. Overall I felt like this new Joker was underwhelming although we have to take into account that he didn't necessarily get all the screen time he may have needed to give a well rounded performance. Hopefully his next outing as the Clown Prince Of Crime will produce a much better performance.
When all is said & done although it may not have the strongest storyline & the pacing isn't great in my opinion this is still a really cool film with bucket loads of humour , wild characters & dope action scenes as can be expected from movie with a ragtag group of bad guys as the protagonists.
