Mythology is what has made me a fan of DC Comics from the day I had decided to take upon alternative reading, from my usual novel escapades. Since insuing on my comic book-enthusiast career, I've come across a variety of lores of monsters, gods and magic, and I have since been on a quest to find stories that carry suchlike potency and attention to detail.
Since my young years, Greek mythology has been my go-to even long after branching out of bookworm world to become a fulltime cinephile. That's until I was introduced to the world of Japanese animated movies, called "anime". The movies below consist of punchy, compelling mythology, while also carrying out exceptional storylines and delivering quality graphics. If you're into myths and lores, check out these sci-fi/fantasy mystery anime movies below.
1. X: The Movie (1996)
It’s the year of destiny, and 15 year old Kamui Shiro, a powerful psychic, has returned to Toyko after a 6 year absence, having left when he was very young. He wants to be with his childhood friends, Fuma (his best friend) and Kotori, Fuma’s little sister (and Kamui’s possible girlfriend). He wants to protect them from all dangers, but destiny and fate are haunting Kamui and pulling in himself and his beloved childhood friends. It is his destiny and his sole decision to decide the fate of the world, no matter if he wants the role or not. Now it is a matter of if he will join the side of the Seven Seals and become the Dragon of Heaven to save mankind or join the Seven Angels and become the Dragon of Earth to destroy all civilization so the earth can heal itself from man’s destruction.
2. Gandahar (1987)
This film is set on the planet Gandahar where peace reigns and poverty is unknown. The utopian lifestyle is upset by reports of people at the outlying frontiers being turned to stone. Sent to investigate, Prince Sylvain (John Shea) crashes and is rescued by the Deformed, hideous genetic experiments gone wrong and left to fend for themselves. With their help, Sylvain discovers that the Metamorphosis, a gigantic brain also created in an experiment, is trying to destroy Gandahar.
3. Darkside Blues (1994)
The Persona Century Corporation has purchased nearly every parcel of land on earth. Dissension is not tolerated within the corporation’s borders and those who oppose Persona are dealt with swiftly. Of those few places not yet under Persona’s control is the free town of Kabuki-cho, also known as “The Dark Side of Tokyo”. Within the town, under the leadership of a woman named Mai, is a small resistance group called Messiah. Into this world steps a man who takes the sobriquet of Kabuki-cho: Darkside. Sealed up in another dimension eighteen years ago by Persona Century, Darkside now returns to aid Messiah using his unique mystic power of renewal.
4. Arion (1986)
The story follows Arion, a young man kidnapped by Hades as a child and raised to believe that his mother was blinded by Zeus and that killing the ruler of Mount Olympus will cure her.
5. Crimson Wolf (1993)
An archaeological expedition finds the mummified bodies of Genghis Khan and his army somewhere in Mongolia. Unaware that the location is cursed, the explorers wake up the former ruler of the Mongolian empire. He warns the intruders that a large calamity will befall the world in one thousand days. The only ones who can prevent this from happening are three persons who bear wolf-shaped arrow scars. They must join forces and kill the “three emperors” so that the Khan’s soul can once again sleep for a thousand years.
